The Ocean Colour (OC) CCI project is now in Phase 2 after the successful completion of Phase 1. A key output of Phase 1 was the release of the v1.0 product to the international science community following internal quality control and analysis. In Phase 2 the user requirements are being continually reviewed through consultation with CMUG and CRG, and against the GCOS requirements where appropriate. This includes a cycle of atmospheric correction and in-water Round Robins to establish the best performing Algorithms, with software updates implemented.

At the end of Year 1 the Version 2 dataset was released, and during Year 2 the project is investigating Case-2 waters that contain substances such as suspended sediments and coloured dissolved organic matter, which modify ocean colour independently of phytoplankton. Also VIIRS is being analysed for inclusion within version 3, and the inclusion of Sentinel-3 OLCI data within version 4 would be considered.

To succeed, the CCI programme must meet the needs of international Climate Research community and contribute effectively to the collective international response to GCOS, via CEOS and GEO.

In addition to European partners, OC-CCI has identified partners in the USA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Naval Research Laboratory), Japan (Hokkaido University) and Canada (Bedford Institute of Oceanography). Additional international expertise is sought through interaction with the International Ocean Colour Coordination Group.

OC products & equivalent CMIP5/Obs4MIPs Parameters

The table below shows the Ocean Colour output which has an equivalent CMIP5 parameters and hence is suitable for submission to Obs4MIPs (Observations for Model Intercomparisons), an activity to make observational products more accessible for climate model intercomparisons.
